Product Description

Oppo UPD-203 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player is the manifestation of the uniting of Oppo with MediaTek once again, drawing on decades of experience in producing premium DVD and Blu-ray players.

UDP-203 has a brushed aluminium fascia, firm steel framework and gold plated connectors that exhibit the custom of first-rate workmanship found in previous Oppo universal players. The dense build presents a lustrous aesthetic while warranting reliable operation and consistent connection.

Audio Processing

Equipped with the top AK4458VN 8 channel 32-bit DAC from AKM, UDP-203 supports 192 kHz / 32-bit PCM and multi-channel DSD64/128 formats. The disc loader incorporates an enhanced laser mechanism that provides superfast disc loading, compatibility with a broad range of optical media, and resilient error detection and correction system for error-free physical media playback.

A modified quad-core SOC OP8591 video decoder/processor assimilates Oppo's progressive video decoding, handling and optimisation skill for 4K UHD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD and other media formats.

The presence of high-dynamic range (HDR) video and an extended colour range is one of the more rousing features of the new 4K UHD format, clearing the way for more natural and true-to-life colours. UDP-203 supports HDR and Wide Colour Gamut. The heightened resolution, cultured contrast, greater brightness and broader colour yield stunning video with supreme clarity and detail.

UDP-203 supports the HDR10 format along with the capability to provide an accurate exchange from HDR to SDR for older displays including between various colour spaces. Support for Dolby Vision will be obtainable in the future via a firmware upgrade. Dolby Vision renovates the TV viewing experience by distributing outstanding highlights, vivid colours and deep darks never seen on standard television screens.

Ultra HD Upscaling

The UDP-203 efficiently upscales lower resolution content up to 4Kx2K at 50/60Hz to an attuned display, which is four times the resolution found on a 1080p Blu-ray disc. It also has advanced picture controls. Alterations can be made to brightness, saturation, contrast, hue and sharpness to recompense any confines of other home theatre components or to suit own personal taste.

Packing a resolution of up to 3840 x 2160 pixels, UHD Blu-ray distributes four times the pixels of Full HD Blu-ray. The UDP-203 is also capable of playing 4K media files and user generated content. Support for decoding the HEVC, H.264, VP9 4K, and Hi10P video codecs provides increased compatibility with user-generated media.

Resolution/ Native Colour Space

The UDP-203 features support for all current SD, HD, and UHD resolutions, including 4K at 60p/50p/30p and 24p using various colour spaces. Audio format support has been expanded to DSD64/128 or multi-channel DSD64 as well as high-resolution lossless formats such AIFF, ALAC, APE, FLAC and WAV.

Latest Surround Formats

In addition to Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio surround formats, the UDP-203 supports bit streaming the newest object-based surround formats, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. These new arrangements add sound effects above you to give a greater sense of 3D-dimensionality.

Compatible with older amplifiers, pre-amps, and receivers that do not support HDMI, the UDP-203 holds a 7.1 multi-channel analogue output section, which sends an inconceivable sound stage and an immersive surround experience.

Home Theatre Integration

The player supports Trigger In/Out, so it can mechanically power other devices linked for ultimate convenience. UDP-203 is easy to add into any system due to its aptitude to accept standard IR, RS-232, third party IP Control system, and HDMI CEC commands.

The newly updated, high-res user interface is designed to be very convenient to navigate, and provide a relaxed way to manage and access media files from both local and network storage.

Diversified Media Support

The UDP-203 plays all standard disc formats, such as DVD, DVD-Audio, 4K UHD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, SACD, and CD. It supports connected USB hard drives and thumb drives up to 16TB and can access content from DLNA servers and SMB shares over the local network.

In-built 802.11ac Wi-Fi or Gigabit Ethernet connects the UDP-203 to users’ home networks, so users can effortlessly play media files stowed on computers and home servers.

Versatile Connectivity

The player has two HDMI outputs – an HDMI 2.0 port for linking to the latest UHD TVs, projectors and AV receivers, and an HDMI 1.4 audio port for joining to older AV receivers. Newer 4K/ HDR capable AV receivers can use a full HDMI 2.0 signal paths, while older receivers have a split AV setup.

A HDMI 2.0 input port offers UHD resolution for users to link an external streaming device. This tactic gives users the flexibility to choose from a varied range of streaming devices and simply upgrade as streaming technologies progress, still exploiting the UDP-203's audio and video processing.

Press Reviews

  • 'Best 4K Blu-ray player £500+' (What Hi-Fi Awards 2017)

  • 'Oppo’s impressive 4K Blu-ray player sets a new home cinema standard. For: Stunning 4K picture, Superb levels of detail and clarity, Rich colours, Big, dynamic sound, Fast and easy to operate... Every ounce of detail is etched out with superb clarity and subtlety... Colours are effusive, inviting you to look deeper into every inch of the screen. The Oppo goes for an appealing colour balance that’s aimed to impress – reds, blues and yellows are richly hued – but they don’t ever look unnatural.' (What Hi-Fi Magazine Jan 2017)

  • 'Motion is stable, too, keeping the action smooth even when faced with tricky slow-panning shots... There’s a certain glossiness to the Oppo’s picture that makes it alluring, but it does so without compromising its hold on reality. Characters and objects seem to pop out in a most impressive manner, too, keeping your attention hooked to the pictures. That’s down to the layers upon layers of subtlety brought out by the Oppo.' (What Hi-Fi Magazine Jan 2017)

  • 'The UDP-203 has been housed in a sturdy metal chassis that’s surprisingly sleek for Oppo. It looks smart, and will easily disappear into your home cinema room. The display is clear and informative and also dimmable. The buttons are responsive, and the 4K disc loader itself is fast and fairly quiet in operation.' (What Hi-Fi Magazine Jan 2017)

  • 'The Oppo simply reveals more layers of subtlety... It’s just as enjoyable and discerning when playing normal Blu-rays and DVDs, and its music credentials are worth making a song and dance about, too. And we’re more than happy to sing the Oppo 203’s praises. It may be a touch pricey, but that sense of awe you get when watching 4K films is worth every penny. We’d start adding it to your home cinema wish list right now.' (What Hi-Fi Magazine Jan 2017)

    30 Dec 2016

I'll update this review a little later on (for reasons I'll mention below) but this is my first Oppo product and I'm very impressed so far.

I'm planning on getting an OLED TV in 2017 but a failure of my trusty PS3 meant I had to purchase a new source player first so I could keep watching my movie collection.

The timing was about right as Oppo released the 203 just as I was looking around at the available players and this one nailed it on everything I needed. I own DVD-Audio disks, SACD, Blu-ray audio and lots of DVD's and Blu-Rays and 3D Blu-Rays so this met all my requirements.

Sound is tremendous, watching The Force Awakens through my Pioneer AV amp and KEF XQ speakers the room fills with sound. I'm watching through a Pioneer Plasma at the moment and there isn't a hint of any picture issues at all. Compared to the PS3 all the disc procedures (loading, moving to chapters) are much faster, which is to be expected anyway.

Listening to a Blu-Ray audio or DVD-Audio disc is also fantastic and I'm glad I can keep listening to these special recordings.

The player is built well and although I keep everything on a hifi stand my equipment unfortunately does get dusty quickly. So the fact there are no fans or vents to get clogged up is a bonus for me as well.

Lots of extra connections for all types of systems is a plus over some of the competition and Oppo seem to be one of the few companies that genuinely provide software updates for their players. Mine has already had two updates since I've had it!

Negatives? Well I've read about hardware glitches with this player although I've yet to experience anything (the problems seem to revolve around 4k play) and make sure you have a lead as the player comes with a Euro style kettle lead rather than a three pin UK plug. No problem as I had a high grade cable at home.

Will be interesting to see how the player deals with 4k once I get the TV in the new year but for those of you thinking about it and you have the money you can't do much better than this player. If I can I'll update this review later in the year.
